A pitch deck is not a document about your company. It is an argument for why this opportunity is worth someone’s attention, money, or time, and it needs to be built in that order.

What problem are you solving, and for whom?

01

Every strong pitch opens with a problem the audience recognises. If the listener has to work out why this matters, attention is already lost.

State the problem in the customer’s language, not in industry terms, and be specific about who has it.

How large is the opportunity, honestly?

02

Inflated market figures damage credibility faster than modest ones. A believable number you can defend is worth more than a large one you cannot.

Show the segment you can realistically reach first, then the path beyond it.

Investors are not buying your slides. They are buying your reasoning.

Why is your solution the right one?

03

Describe what you do simply enough that someone outside your industry understands it. Then explain why this approach beats the alternatives, including doing nothing.

The alternative of doing nothing is the competitor most pitches forget.

What evidence do you have so far?

04

Evidence is what separates a plan from a pitch. Customers, revenue, retention, pilot results, or a waiting list all count.

If evidence is thin, say so and show what you have learned instead. Honesty is more persuasive than optimism.

In practice

The five questions to answer first

  • 1

Problem Who has it, and how painful is it?

  • 2

Opportunity How large, and how do you know?

  • 3

Solution Why this approach over the alternatives?

  • 4

Evidence What have you already proven?

What exactly are you asking for?

05

End with a specific request: the amount, the terms, what it buys, and what it lets you prove. Vague asks produce vague answers.

Make it easy for the listener to say yes to a defined next step.

Rehearse until the deck is optional.

06

The strongest pitches work without the slides. If you can make the argument in five minutes with no deck, the deck becomes support rather than a script.

Practise with someone outside your business and note every question they ask.

In summary

Answer the questions and the deck writes itself.

Preparing a pitch is mostly thinking, not designing. Once the five questions have honest answers, the slides become a straightforward way of presenting them.
