Positioning is not a tagline exercise. It is the work of deciding who you are for, what you do better than the alternatives, and making that easy for other people to repeat on your behalf.

Positioning decides how quickly people understand you.

01

Most people give a business a few seconds before deciding whether it is relevant to them. Clear positioning uses those seconds well by answering who this is for and what it does.

When positioning is vague, the visitor has to do the work of figuring you out. Most will not.

Choose a specific customer, even if it feels limiting.

02

Trying to appeal to everyone produces language that appeals to no one. Naming a specific customer makes your message sharper and, counter-intuitively, tends to attract a wider audience over time.

Specificity signals competence. A business that clearly serves someone like me is more credible than one that claims to serve everyone.

If your team cannot repeat your positioning from memory, your customers certainly cannot.

Say what you do better, not just what you do.

03

A list of services describes your capacity. Positioning describes your advantage. The useful question is what a customer gets from you that they would not get elsewhere.

That answer should be provable. Claims that cannot be demonstrated create doubt rather than confidence.

Make it repeatable across your whole team.

04

Positioning only works when everyone tells the same story. If your website, your sales conversations, and your proposals describe the business differently, customers hear inconsistency.

Write it down in one short paragraph and make sure every person who represents the business can say it from memory.

In practice

How to test your positioning

  • 1

Repeat Can each team member state it the same way?

  • 2

Specific Does it name a customer, not everyone?

  • 3

Provable Can you demonstrate the advantage you claim?

  • 4

Useful Does it help you decline the wrong work?

Let positioning guide what you build and publish.

05

Good positioning is a filter. It tells you which services to develop, which content to write, and which opportunities to decline.

When a decision is difficult, the position usually contains the answer.

Revisit it as the business changes.

06

Positioning is not permanent. As your capabilities grow and your market shifts, the statement that served you two years ago may now be holding you back.

Review it deliberately, on a schedule, rather than letting it drift.

In summary

Clarity is what makes growth repeatable.

Clear positioning makes marketing cheaper, sales conversations shorter, and hiring easier, because everyone is working from the same understanding of what the business is for.
