What growing brands should know before running paid ads.

Paid campaigns perform better when the offer, audience, message, landing page and measurement plan are aligned first.

Paid advertising can grow a business quickly, but it also exposes every weakness in your offer, your message, and your website. The campaigns that work are usually the ones that were prepared properly before any budget was spent.

Be clear about what you are actually selling.

01

Paid traffic does not fix an unclear offer. Before writing a single ad, be able to state what you sell, who it is for, what it costs, and why someone should choose it over the alternative.

If that is difficult to write in plain language, the campaign will be difficult to write too, and the click will be expensive.

Choose a narrower audience than feels comfortable.

02

Broad targeting spends money teaching the platform who your customer is. Starting narrower, with the segment you already convert well, gives the algorithm cleaner signals and gives you cleaner data.

You can widen later once you know which segment responds. Widening from a position of evidence is far cheaper than narrowing from a position of confusion.

Paid media multiplies whatever you already have. If the offer is unclear, it multiplies the confusion.

Send the click somewhere built for it.

03

Sending paid traffic to a homepage is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes. The homepage has to serve everyone, so it rarely answers the specific promise the ad made.

A focused landing page that repeats the offer, addresses the obvious objection, and asks for one clear action will usually outperform a beautiful general page.

Set up measurement before the first pound is spent.

04

Decide what counts as a result, make sure it is tracked, and confirm the tracking works with a test submission. Without this, you are optimising toward clicks rather than customers.

Also record where enquiries say they came from. Platform data and reality often disagree, and the gap between them is useful information.

In practice

The checklist before you launch

  • 1

Offer One sentence a stranger would understand.

  • 2

Audience The segment you already convert well.

  • 3

Landing page Built for this campaign, not borrowed.

  • 4

Tracking Tested end to end with a real submission.

Give the campaign enough time and enough budget to learn.

05

Judging a campaign after a few days encourages changes that reset its learning. Decide in advance how long the test runs and what result would justify continuing.

A budget spread thinly across many campaigns rarely produces a conclusion. Fewer, better funded tests produce answers faster.

Review the search terms and the creative separately.

06

Weak performance usually comes from one of two places: you are reaching the wrong people, or you are saying the wrong thing to the right people. Looking at search terms and creative separately tells you which.

Fixing the wrong one is how budgets disappear without anything being learned.

In summary

Prepare first, then spend with confidence.

The businesses that get good results from paid advertising are rarely the ones spending the most. They are the ones who prepared the offer, the audience, the landing page, and the measurement before the campaign went live.
